Apps are created to benefit humans and make life easier and more convenient. But, what if we flipped it around and people used apps to help others? Well, these three ethical apps do just that.

  1. Charity Miles – This app allows users to sign up to a specific charity and exercise to raise money for the charity of their choice. Originally, the app was aimed at attracting large corporate sponsors but the Charlity Miles had to create a large user base. The app donates funds to the designated charity based on the number of miles logged by runners, walkers, and bikers using the app. Once your workout has been completed, it displays an ad from a sponsor and your achievement of miles completed and a "good faith" approximation of your real world impact. For example, running a certain distance can contribute towards a certain amount of puppies and kittens vaccinations.

  2. Givergy –Uses custom online auctions to raise money for charities online and at events through an app. Fundraisers are able to create their auction or pledge drive online via the easy to use system, whether it’s a gala, drinks reception, sports event or simply a standalone website. Fundraisers are able to choose from luxury items and experiences supplied by the Givergy team, or supplement the event with their own items. Money is collected automatically from winning bidders at the close of the auction and the funds raised are then  immediately transferred to the charity’s bank account using Stripe Connect, making the whole process seamless.

  3. Buycott – The app reads product barcodes and provides a comprehensive view of the history and ethics of the company. The user joins certain Buycott campaigns that sets a list of filters based on their support or opposition to certain issues. The app alerts users if the product goes against the customer values allowing them to "vote with their wallet". Buycott was originally created to promote corporate social responsibilities of production companies and raise the consumer's awareness of the issues and consequences related to the issue.

These apps provide a positive outcome from the number of people staring aimlessly at a phone screen for hours on end and actually end up benefiting society. What a refreshing shift in thought!
