Android's app-downloading service has broken the app-downloading record on the app store! Google Play services app, the app that makes it all happen for your Android phone, has just broken five billion downloads on the Google Play Store – a huge record.
This is a major milestone for Google's third-party app store. The Google Play Services framework is a key part of Google's presence on Android devices – a required component of any phone that uses Android. It is necessary for apps such as Maps, Google Wallet and many other Google services you wouldn't even think of!
It's no surprise that Google Play Services is the first app to break five billion downloads, seeing as it is running on every "official" version of Android.
It may come as a surprise that, despite the huge download success, Google Play Services isn't actually loved by all Android users. Users have complained about that amount of space it takes up on their phone, and that you have to download it as a standalone service – rather than piece-by-piece as other developers choose to integrate tools.
Nevertheless, this broken record is a HUGE moment for Google Play Services, and for Google in general.
